Clare's first Mekong Cat!

Kiwi go's for a swim!

Gavin misses his big carp by a few hours!

After a late minute booking we meet Clare and Gavin at about 1.00am we booked them into a small Bungalow that has a nice fishing platform, they had booked a budget fishing package, but to tell the truth we just couldn't allow a customer to spend two nights and one day without some luxury, so we added the coffee maker and the trimmings for them.

We arranged to fish the next day, so knowing that Gavin was a keen fisherman I woke them at 6.00am, the day started slow, with a bit of a wait for a bite. Now Gavin loves to fish his Carp, I had to be honest and tell him that I personally had never targeted them but we could put a rod out for him. I am happy to say that the first fish of the day was a 10kg 22lb Carp, these are hard fighting fish and cunning to, but Gavin did great using a nice slow motion and showing a great level of control of the fish.

Followed soon after was a Giant Mekong Catfish, these continued through the day at a slow pace due to the temperature drop in the water. Gavin soon had these fish mastered, from the making of the bait ball to the casting and positioning of it, his technique was great and soon he had his sights set on bigger fish.

After a while Clare stepped up to the plate and had a go, landing a 20kg/44lb Giant Mekong Catfish, this was a tricky fish that decided to dive under a bungalow a few doors down, because this was Clare's first Mekong I decided to not let this one go, so a quick swim with the rod soon had Clare back fighting the fish in deeper water, she soon had it netted and was very happy with the results! I think she is looking forward to showing the pictures of her catch at the lake back home! Gavin mind you had taken a liking to the Big Game fishing and wanted to land a Big Carp, he spent that day and part of the following day chumming up and trying to hook a big one. We left them enjoying the surroundings and the fishing, when we returned the next day there was Gavin still chumming up for that big fish, we were told they were worried about getting to sleep as some of the bungalows were partying, but they crashed at about nine or ten pm and had a good nights sleep after a good days fishing. they decided to make a move to go onto the next stage of there holiday.

Well the sad part to this story is that one hour after they left Big Joe of Team Kiwi hooked up and then landed a Pending World Record Giant Mekong Delta Catfish at 76.3kg, now in reading this Gavin will be gutted as 1 hour later Big Joe also hooks that Carp Gavin was chumming for, a nice 32kg 70lb Giant Carp. Now I am a Pro Guide and I must give credit where credit is due the way Gavin nailed the fish was impressive! Slow strong pumps of the rod and great fish control, now mix this with the guidance we have given him and I feel sorry for the Cats when he returns!
