Catch Report -11th February 2007

A beautiful Pangasius Bocourti, never seen a hook

An undisclosed angler's paradise

Imagine if you can a large lake of 50 acres or so, stocked with fish up to 150kg/330lb, that have never seen a hook. A virgin lake, take the time to think of that for a moment... Now imagine only you  fishing it with us as your guides for the day.

Welcome to our world! Kiwi Fishing have taken the managers of Siam Fishing Tours to have a bit of a fish on this lake and to show them the surroundings. This is the type of thing that many dream and few live, but soon it will be open exclusively for our clients!

This water is around 50 acres and in places up to 35 meters or 115feet deep, it has been home to what are possibly some of the best kept and finest quality of fish anywhere in the Bangkok area with over 20 years of stocking, feeding and no fishing whatsoever! At this moment my estimate is that there are 10 different world records that can be taken at this lake, once we have devised an angling approach capable of landing the fish, which is being worked on as we write this catch report.

A couple of nice Pacu

In addition to the amazing fish swimming here, the lake is also actually part of one of Bangkok's most exclusive 5 star housing and long term tourism complexes, where 5 star service is the norm, even whilst fishing!

Now if you read our catch reports then you understand the fact that Team Kiwi catch big fish, but this lake possibly represents the biggest challenge for Kiwi as a guide, and also to our clients, there are Giant Mekong's in this lake pushing 150kg, we have also seen Arapaima that we wouldn't even dare estimate, but they certainly are at least double the size of the existing world record. Ok so how do you catch a Giant Mekong Catfish of that size on a rod and reel, on a lake with steep sides, and where the big fish are at least 100mtrs off the bank as a rule? I personally don't think what we are planning has been done in Thailand before but I could be wrong on that, well that leaves the question of how are we planning to do it? Well we are combining some of the salt water techniques with freshwater techniques, and we will be floating when we take these fish! That means we are putting a fighting chair in a boat since we don't want to lose our clients overboard! And moving up to 80 lb mono rig to over come some snags on the bottom, and fighting the fish like marlin and tuna, Big Game Kiwi Style and yes that means there is a bar on the boat! But more on that one later.

A couple of nice Pacu

We cannot list all the species in this lake as things are being kept under raps for a while as we put the finishing touches to the package. There is one interesting breed worth a mention though, that is a species of catfish that doesn't have a well known common name, its latin name is Pangasius Bocourti, the one pictured above would constitute a world record had we had scales and witness around. After landing a 35kg(apprx) fish today, it was one hard running fish, I was fishing my fathers rod as it seems to be lucky, a Shimano Bait Runner 4500 on a Penn Power Stick not my most favourite type of reel, but its lucky! Well this fish nearly spooled me straight off it was scary to see the run as it was like a Tuna run, hard and fast, running deep then coming up, I used a very slow action on the fish and to be honest was surprised that I landed it, this breed is one fantastic fighting fish and good looking to with purplish silver two tone flanks, I was surprised to see the speed and power, it was like the Giant Mekong in second gear instead of first! These fish have never seen a hook, it is one of the most naturally sustained lakes that you could imagine the perfect lake, mixed with some truly Top Class surroundings, Bangkok style. In addition to this species, the lake is full of fish that have average sizes that are higher than we see elsewhere our first few Pacu came in at around 15LB a piece too. The condition of the fish are a credit to the owners, they are just pristine, because the lake has been kept clean and tidy as the centre piece of this 5 star resort town, the fish have undoubtedly benefit from this environment.

Like the name of this story, A Fisherman's Paradise!
