The joy's of pro-plus! Just off the plane and straight into fish!

Paul & Dean's story

We collected Paul and Dean from the airport at 6:30am. Thinking they would be tired from the long journey we had organised an afternoons fishing at fishing world, a much quieter venue than Bungsamran, somewhere they could relax and prepare themselves for the action we knew would follow during the week ahead.

But Paul and Dean came thru arrivals with a different agenda! Full of energy and a pocket full of pro-plus, they was really keen to fish Bungsamran immediately, so after a couple of quick phone calls we had organised a Bungalow and guide, to give them a chance at the smaller cats.

By 9:30am we arrived at our Bungalow and started preparing the rods and reels. Paul & Dean are both very experienced worldwide sportfishing anglers, with a keen eye for tackle. Dean had a rod we felt would be perfect for Bungsamran. An 8ft Ultimate Catfish rod with a really solid backbone, classed suitable for casting up to 500grams, coupled with a Shimano 6500 complete with Whiplash 100LB Braid. Paul had brought a  DAM uptider the same as ones we have been using on the smaller fish, coupled with a Daiwa Emblem, also complete with 100LB Braid.

The first fish of the week

We began fishing immediately with bread and coconut milk cast towards the middle of the lake, and in typical Bungsamran fashion it was not long before the first fish was on. As expected both Paul and Dean where somewhat surprised at the shear strength of Bungsamrans Mekong Catfish. The first fish was only around 18kg yet as usual with the Mekong Catfish it was pulling hard and refusing to come to the surface, but Paul played the fish with expertise and it was not long before the fish surfaced and was netted. Paul and Dean looked at each other in disbelief, and proposed the question. “If this is how the small fish fight, how does one four, five or six times that size behave?” Hopefully they would find out during the week ahead.
