After their first few days fishing Paul & Dean wanted to understand and use other fishing methods, knowing full well that if we had fished with Bread and Coconut milk towards the middle of the lake there would be a repeat performance of the previous days 700LB to 800LB 25+ fish haul, which had produced a best fish of around 32kg. Therefore the next day they decided to fish with Lum, still casting towards mid-water on one float, and then fishing close in on another, also on a float, but with the bait on the bottom. This rod was targeting the Giant Siamese Carp.

As the day wore on more small Sawai and Mekong Catfish fell to both rods, the carp had been showing all morning but unfortunately did not seem to be taking baits confidently, although just to illustrate the fact that our guide Boonsong was correct about the presence of carp in our swim a local turned up and placed a small ball of lum on the bottom with his first cast within a few feet of our baited area, to our frustration this cast immediately produced a Giant Siamese Carp of around 25kg to 30kg, on the anglers tiny 5ft rod and multiplier, the fight lasted a good 20 minutes or more. I went around to the other Bungalow to take a closer look at the carp, it was immaculate, just the fish Paul & Dean had been after. The Thai gentlemen who landed it then beckoned me over to where his tackle box laid, and produced a carp scale of immense proportions, this scale came from a carp of around 85kg to 95kg that this local had landed some weeks before from that same bungalow, but in true Thai style he had not bothered to weigh it as usual, it was to be a strange omen of events that where to follow for Paul & Dean the next day. However today’s fishing did not pass without event, when we managed to snap not one but two rods in succession on what where relatively small Mekongs, including Deans 8ft Ultimate Catfish Rod. The only conclusion we could arrive at was that both rods had been significantly weakened by the previous days non-stop action. Fortunately though no fish where lost as a result of the rod failures, with Boonsong taking a dive to recover a fish of around 20kg from under the bungalow with broken rod in hand!

By the third day Paul & Dean had observed a number of different fishing tactics that our guide Boonsong used to great effect, but as experienced anglers they was keen to take full control of the rods. Not unlike most UK anglers who fish Bungsamran for the first time Paul and Dean felt it was possible to refine and improve Thai fishing styles, but for today just largely wanted use Thai fishing methods without too much intervention from the guide.
Paul had very quickly learnt to identify the tell tale signs of large fish sucking in and blowing out the bait and with a fast strike found himself into a slow moving fish that headed out into the lake. After a fight lasting 20 minutes or so the fish started to tire, and was netted. At 47kg this fish represented one of Paul’s personal goals, which was to catch a 100LB fish, and it was great to know that Bungsamran achieved this for him. Paul & Dean took more and more control of their own fishing over the next few days, having learned about the local methods. Paul had been hitting the smaller bites with great accuracy. It was one such bite that led to the weeks most exciting yet frustrating episode.
