Catch Report -22nd May 2007

I wondered where the catfished had got too!

Now it's my turn!

Since we came out to establish Siam Fishing Tours, one of my eternal frustrations has been the lack of time I have had to enjoy my own fishing. Between finding a suitable base for the business and keeping up with the demands of this website, and catering for clients, time just always seems in short supply.

A nice Pacu to start the day

Now though, with the low season upon us, and things having started to settle down at the house, I'm looking forward to getting a few fish under my belt over the next few months, and today is the first of those sessions, Phil and Damian have gone off to Ko Chang for a chill out, and with no customers for a few days its time for me to fill my boots!

Feeling lazy, and wanting to find out about a new guide we are considering using meant that it was an easy decision to employ the services of "Mr Badboy" today. It was to be a very good decision. We was all set up and fishing on two rods by about 9:15am, and I was just sitting back and enjoying my first glass of Coke, when the nearer of the two rods "thwacked" over and started bucking as the fish sped off into the lake. Covering myself in Coke (as usual!...why do they always do that to us?) I quickly jump to the rod, released it from its holder (a hole in the timber decking) and wound down fast to the fish.

Early runs have not been common place for us in recent months. By that I mean, we always expect runs but usually its after a good hours baiting up, not say 10 minutes into the days fishing, so this felt like a flying start. As it turns out it was an interesting start to the day, when a perfectly condition Pacu surfaced and was very smoothly netted by Boy. Around 6kg/13.2LB, not bad!

Giant Siamese Carp

Having weighed and photographed this specimen the rods where straight back in the water, I settled down to my already half full glass of Coke most of it now on the floor...and bang! Yep you guessed it, the other rod sped off. This fish was definitely bigger than the first, and it felt suspiciously carp like, I kept my fingers crossed as it tried to get under the bungalow, bullying it more than I would like, it surfaced very suddenly and Boy didn't miss his chance, the fish was netted before it got a second chance. At 21kg/46LB it was indeed a carp, I thought to myself, 'this is already a good day, maybe I should quite while I'm ahead' , but we was still less than hour into the day!

Things slowed down a little, in the next hour or so, with a few foolish Tilapia managing to get my 0/1 hook into their impossibly small mouths. It wasn't until about 1pm that things got interesting again. With what seemed like a very hesitant take, once again I wound into the fish, which at first I thought was another Tilapia, but it had actually run off with the bait, so if it was a Tilapia, it was certainly a good one. After the short tussle what came to the net pleased me even more than my earlier carp. My first Mrigal from Bungsamran it was only a small example, but it was great to see some new species getting to the bait before the cats, I was now nearly halfway thru my day, and I'd not had a single catfish, just two different carp, and a Pacu, wheres all the cats gone! But that was soon to change, when shortly after both rods had been rebaited, a very slow deliberate take was met with solid resistance on the strike. No doubting what this was, a Big Mekong moving off like a submarine!

My first Bungsamran Mrigal

It had been a while since I had the opportunity to enjoy a battle with a big Mekong, so I really enjoyed listening to my reel lose a hundred yards or so of line against a fully tightened clutch, as the fish stubbornly headed out towards the otherside of the lake. When it finally decided to stop, I began drawing it back to the Bungalow, but as is nearly always the case this was just the start, and it wasn't long before I had more line out than ever, as the fish pulled harder still to head off into the horizon. The battle carried on like this for another 20 minutes or so, until finally the fish was tiring against the clutch. All the fight had gone out of the fish by the time it came alongside the bungalow. The scales showed me 50kg...my first 100LB+ fish for a year!

55kg Mekong Catfish

As the afternoon wore on more takes came to both rods, and it wasn't long before the catfish tally had reached it's usual levels of 10 or more fish all between 15kg and 25kg, perhaps the swim had produced enough surprises today? Nope! At about 5:30pm just before I was going to ask Boy to start winding things up, another solid take was met with a hard and fast run, from the days best catfish a 55kg specimen. What a day, 5 species, a good carp, a rare carp, a Pacu, and two large cats, if i can do this for the customers in one day, they should be more than happy, only trouble is they won't need a week! Well I'll soon find out, just had a call, got a customer tomorrow, just as well I had a good day!
