Living and fishing in Bangkok, you get to meet all kinds of people. Gary from Sydney is a regular visitor to the land of smiles, but our paths had only crossed due to our mutual appreciation for a few racks of pool, and the occasional Jack Daniels! The usual subjects come up in discussion, you know, where do you work? what do you do? Which ones your girlfriend! etc etc. And it was one of these discussions that had got Gary into the idea of a days fishing. Once you get me on the subject of fishing it doesn't take long for my enthusiasm to start rubbing off and make you feel as though your missing something...well you are! Gary said he had friends who where into their fishing but that he wasn't as keen, no matter though since he was on holiday, and had an "OWP", I wasn't about to let him off the hook (haha), he found it hard to say no, and also insisted I fished with him too because he knew I had planned a trip for myself for today, a complete gentleman!

Gary had never caught any large fish, so I knew no matter what Bungsamran threw at us today, he was in for a shock, so I decided to put him on a diet of bread and coconut milk... I don't mean him, I mean the fish! Using Boonsong's exceptional talent for this style of fishing, it was only a matter of moments before the rod was being handed to Gary, for the first fish. The look on his face was priceless! It said "Bloody hell! In an Aussie accent, what's on the end of this line?"

Having weighed and photographed this specimen the rods where straight back in the water, It wasn't long before it was Ay's turn, and for the first few seconds of her being handed the rod, it really did look as though she was going to be dragged straight into the drink. One thing I love about Thai women though, they are willing to give anything a fair go, and within a few minutes of being handed the rod, Ay was starting to make here first Mekong look like a bit of a wimp, far play to Ay! But once on the deck, Ay handled and touched the fish with real care, stroking its head as if to calm it, something that was a pleasure to witness, a buddist trait perhaps? Whatever it is it makes Thai people some of the most pleasant you can wish to be around.

The day carried on very much as it had begun, with one Mekong after another coming to each of us in turn. Ay, was the first to take a back seat, whilst me and Gary continued to rack up a good tally of fish often playing in two at once. By the end of the day we had taken well over 50 Mekongs approaching 1000kg in weight terms
