Paul's biggest ever catch a 47kg Mekong Catfish

continued....Paul & Dean's story

Paul & Dean had been fishing pretty much on their own now for a day or two, and Boonsong their guide seemed to have vanished. Paul struck the tiniest of knocks on the float and found himself into a decent fish, he handed the rod to Dean at this stage because they had agreed to share on the rods, and Dean was still after his first 100LB+ Mekong Catfish. However, whilst being played Dean did not have the slightest idea what the fish was however having seen a huge tail on one or two occasions towards the end of the fight he was reasonably convinced it was another good catfish. How wrong could he be! Boonsong turned up on the bungalow just in time to see Paul net the fish a huge carp! He grabbed the net handle and tried to request that Paul and Dean prepare the deck by cooling with large amounts of water.

Steady action from the smaller Mekong Catfish

Large carp in Bungsamran are extremely rare and valuable fish, and its vitally important that if they are removed from the water that any decking or surface they are placed on is cooled adequately before a carp is brought out otherwise the heat on the deck can burn the fishes belly causing shock and death, unfortunately on this occasion we had not left our unhooking matts with Paul & Dean, as they are still not widely used (if at all) by the Thai Guides even if provided. The Thai Guides have a way of doing things all of their own that is passed down to them by the management of the venue when dealing with the large fish, this generally involves flooding the deck of the bungalow with numerous buckets of water, whilst letting the carp recover from the fight in the net before trying to extract it from the water for weighing and photo‘s. Unfortunately on this occasion this process was lost in communication between Paul, Dean and Boonsong, and whilst Boonsong was busy trying to get Paul & Dean to thoroughly cool down the deck he failed to keep a close eye on the enormous carp which was too big even for Boonsong's large net. With Boonsong looking frantically over his shoulder at Paul and Dean, the nets angle tilted just enough for the carp (which was already half in and half out of the net due to it's size) to slide backwards out of the net, the hooked had fallen out, so in the blink of an eye the carp sank back down into the depths.

The best fish of the week at 47kg

Paul & Dean was gutted, especially when they was then told quite casually by Boonsong that he recognised the fish by its markings, and its weight at last capture? 95kg!!! As is the Thai way Boonsong seemed initially very un-phased by the loss, which is more than can be said for Paul & Dean, especially when I then arrived on the Bungalow an hour or so later, and informed them that they had just hooked played and landed a Giant Siamese Carp that would of shattered the current IGFA world record by about 43kg! (nearly doubling it!)

I have to say Paul & Dean were extremely gracious in this loss, after all what kind of guiding operation loses a fish of that calibre out of the net? Paul & Dean could of given us a real roasting! Although on the other hand what operation assisted getting them to the fish in the first place? These fish are not hooked very often, especially not by visiting anglers. This is a tragic tale of loss for all concerned, from which many valuable lessons have been learnt by us, and some of our guiding practices have been changed as a result (tactic’s,fish handling and guiding practices). So for any of Paul or Deans fellow anglers back in the UK who doubt that they took a 200LB plus carp please accept it as gospel, fish of this size do come out of Bungsamran from time to time, usually falling to Thai anglers and so don’t get as widely publicised as we would like. For Paul and Dean it was a lost photo opportunity, and the frustration of simply being left with a “the one that got away” story, even though it was netted! For us here at Siam Fishing Tours it was a dream catch that if photographed and publicised in the UK could have had us fully booked for months and months ahead. All we can ask is for Paul & Dean to come back soon and help us try and get that fish again or a bigger one, we know their in there and now so do Paul & Dean, they’ve seen them with their own eyes.
