The one that got away!(Well almost)

There comes a time in a Guides life where you must bow your head in Professional shame, this is my time!!

I had that feeling that it would be a good day, I had said that the Big fish would come on at about 4pm when the wind dropped, we were getting bites around that time but when the wind stopped it was at around 5.30 that we hooked up.

Doug had turned up so we were sitting talking fishing and comparing scars from his 93kg Giant Mekong Catfish as we were both cut, Doug with 3 stitches and my 2 inch long not to deep slice on my foot when it just all turned to adrenalin the line screamed off, we were hooked up and looking good!

I had decided that after our Thai friend Joe landed a Pending World Record that it was time for a Thai woman to step up to the plate. Kag my wife was the one to take the roll, so we strapped here into a big fish, and it started to run hard! The rod was bent and we had to give her a hand with support as it was her first time on a monster using stand up fighting gear. Then I noticed the worst possible thing.... I had a half hitch in the nylon around the spool, we had to keep the drag off a bit as we ran the fish out. The fish was about 30 yards from the end of the lake, we were wetting the line trying to keep it cool, and working to free the nylon as it came off, we were so close to being able to fight it properly when it locked up, the line broke at the reel.

This was not a good situation as there was now a big fish swimming around with 200 yards of 50lb mono hanging out of it. THE MASTER Mr Boonsong, well he says his favorite phrase..."no problem" and off Jep goes to get the canoe.

Sure enough the Master does his thing, he snags the line on his second cast with our spare rod, pulls it in so I re-threaded the rod and tied the line back onto the spool, and the fight is on again! This was now Boonsong's fish since things had got a bit out of control for my wife to cope with. He didn't want the Gimbal nor did he want the shoulder harness, this was Thai Style Big Game fishing, a pure show of style and control of Bungsamran's biggest residents, a scene few visiting anglers see. The story did not end here, this was a slow moving big fish that decided to dive and wrap on the old bridge posts in the middle of the lake. So we jumped back in the canoe, we get to the middle, both Boonsong and Jep are saying to me to go swimming with the rod, well thanks mates! Take me to the middle of the lake with a Big Fish on the line and lots of other BIG fish some with Very BIG teeth and tell your mate to jump in with the rod and follow that Big Fish under water at night! Why not?

I have to ask myself at this point who is more crazy the people that are dead serious about me getting in the water, or the person taking off his shirt and emptying his pockets? Anyway it was all worthwhile, the fish God smiled on me and the fish came free! I do feel honoured that these two fine fisherman have the confidence to tip me out of the boat to get the fish, if I didn't go Boonsong would have gone, but today he was fishing and I was doing the Guiding, it is a hard and dangerous job at times. So it was back to the bungalow with Boonsong fighting the fish standing up in the canoe, it was a sight to see! That takes skill in boatmanship and fishing! Well after fighting this beast for another half an hour it went under the bungalow, so there was more "get in there NOW" going on! No problem I had the fins, so it was clear in no time and Boonsong was fighting again. The show of skill continued as Boonsong went from bungalow to bungalow, we started at one end and 1 ½ hours later we finished at the other it had taken two canoe rides and two dives to get this fish let alone the fact that we had to get it twice. It was a slow motion fight that was just a pleasure to watch it is not often you get to watch someone with that much skill put on a show.

In the end it was a 78kg Giant Mekong Catfish. We weighed it and posed for a few shots, in doing so Kag received a good fish slapping as his monster tail slapped her across the legs, it even had a good crack to it, this is a show of how dangerous it can be to deal with these fish, in the water it is worse you are in their world! This is a story of the one that got away, but through Skill and patience it didn't get away for long! Credit where credit is due this was some of the best fishing I have ever seen in my life. I am pleased to be able to call this man my friend and my teacher. To Mr Boonsong a true Master!
