Chao Praya Catfish

More world record class Chao Praya Catfish!

With our guest Andy Wilson heading out to the Andaman Sea  for a day's sailfishing with Stuart, Richard Foster and some lads from one of the UK's top fishing magazines on John Pearce's new $1M+ USD boat "Reel Blue", (visit www.wahoo.ws for more details),  it was time for yours truly to focus a little harder on the fishing. Having taken a few Giant Siamese Carp in the morning to around 30lbs I'd put a couple of dead baits out, they kept coming back attacked by the venues large population of shrimp having eaten all one side of the Mackrel, so rather than waste the baits I simply folded the fish in half and represented it on the hook. Barely had I got a chance to set the bite alarm when the bait-runner literally screamed into action, the Chao Praya, which was probably tipping the scales at 30kg had taken nearly 20yds of line before I could even lay a hand on the rod! And the run didn't stop or even slow down when I set the hook. In as little as 10 seconds the Chao Pray had stripped nearly a 100mtrs of line off the spool. A  long and protracted battle was joined, which saw the predator move up and down the length of the lake several times before it started to tire, finally around 20 minutes or so later the battle was over with Sean skilfully netting what is my personal best Chao Praya estimated at equal to the existing IGFA record.  Siam Fishing Tours have had numerous guests snap up on the take from these fish at a number of different venues, so it was great to finally get a larger specimen up for a photo or two. The Chao Praya is possibly one of Thailand's best sport fish, and at these sizes and in this condition I would say they are well worth targeting by the visiting angler.
