Please accept our apologies!! As usual, a good 3 or 4 months has passed since we could find time to write about the exploits we are having fishing in Thailand, with guests from as far a-field as Khazakstan to California! We recently moved house, which is far more difficult a challenge here in Bangkok than most of the fishing is! Except perhaps that is, for those wily Giant Siamese Carp, which with the exception of Gillham's Fishing Resort have been proving very elusive lately . That is up until now!
Paul Roberts, from Bristol was on his 4th fishing trip in Thailand, with Siam Fishing Tours. Paul, having had perhaps a half a dozen or more Giant Mekong Catfish from Bungsamran in excess of 40kg's up to 65kg's, was looking for some new experiences, so elected to take just one day on Bungsamran on this trip with the remainder spent in the provinces at Palm Tree Lagoon and Lake Monsters. The carp was simply the icing on the cake on his last day's fishing, which was also interrupted by a violent storm that saw Bungsamran turned into a scene out of Twister! Paul's trip Began at Palm Tree Lagoon:-
For a small venue, Palm Tree Lagoon certainly packs a punch. Our latest guest Paul for example, only got to fish it for a single day, since he had an upset stomach on day two of his trip. Even so it didn't stop the venue producing his best ever Pacu at a smidgen under 10kg and Chao Praya Catfish of nearly 30kg pictured below:-
However Paul Robert's Chao Praya is considered a baby by Palm Tree Lagoon standards, since it's the only fishing venue in Thailand that has Chao Praya catfish near (if not over) the 100kg mark! As Paul Cropper of Manchester our guest in May/June would be happy to confirm. Paul experienced a viscious take from one of Palm Tree Lagoon 's larger Chao Praya Catfish, but the take was so fast, that even when Paul offered the slightest resistance by thumbing the spool of 80lb Braid to set the hook, the line with it's 100lb mono leader instantly snapped, but in the very short time in which the fish was connected it travelled some 15 or 20 mtrs, in just a second or two!
However Paul Cropper was not to be ultimately disappointed with Palm Tree Lagoon since later the same day once again in a torrential down poor Palm Tree Lagoon produced the goods with the splendid Arapaima pictured below.
Paul played the Arapiama like a true veteran despite the torrential downpour and thunderbolts going off all around him. This Arapaima with a weight well in excess of 100kg's was the best of a total of 6 Arapaima between 50kg and 105kg Paul took on his two week fishing trip, taking in Bungsamran, Shadow Lake, Gillham's Fishing Resort and Palm Tree Lagoon. In addition to 4 Arapaima at Gillham's, Paul also took some 20 Giant Siamese Carp, and his best Redtail of the trip of 67lb. Paul also took a Redtail of 50lb at Lake Monsters, so all in all he had one of the most successful fishing trips of any of our guests in recent months.
Whilst, hosting at Palm Tree Lagoon yours truly decided to have a few hours after the venues 70kg Giant Siamese Carp, but instead connected with an immaculate 30LB+ Indian Carp that looked like it had never seen a hook. Meanwhile around the other side of the lake Paul continued to add to his species tally with a Tapo, a fish very similar to the Chao Praya Catfish, but with black spot or blotch behind the gill cover. One other fish Paul caught, well worth a mention and a picture is this fantastic Pacu at 12kg.
In May we had several Angler's interested in targeting the Barramundi Fishing in Thailand, firstly we had another Paul Roberts, this time from Kazakstan, Paul tells us that there is some incredible fishing to be had in Kazakstan with huge carp, trout and other species UK and European anglers are familiar with. But on his day with us Barramundi on the fly was his target. at the time Boon Mar Pond's had one pond with some truly exceptional Barramundi in it, with fish well in excess of 10kg's. These fish made for a great days sport on light tackle as you can see from the pictures below.

Another Barramundi makes a desperate bid to shake Paul's fly, but ultimately without success!

Angus Rolle from Australia Also had a crack at the Barra, and was amazed at the non stop action from fish between 5kg and 10kg, having tried just about every lure in his extensive collection I don't think there was one that the Barramundi at Boon Mar Ponds that did not take a fancy too, and rubber lures appeared even more effective on the day. Once again there was constant displays of aerobatics from most of the fish we hooked up with.
These are just a very few of the highlights of the last few months fishing, and we would like to once again thank all of you who have fished with us since February, and the support we get from our fishing guides. We have many more pictures of the numerous guest we have fished, and will add them to our photo album in due course, but just as a final pass....here's our good friend Jamie, with his first ever Arapaima at around 95kgs, and yours truly with what I believe is possibly the best Redtail to be caught to date in Thailand at 80lb+
