Fishing in Thailand Newsletter

Winter 2008

To all our angling friends who have fished with us to date I hope you will accept our apologies for not updating you sooner with catch reports. We have been so busy during Thailand's tourist season that writing up catch reports has proven virtually impossible, so now instead of catch reports we will be writing a regular newsletter of which this we hope is the first of many. Before we bring you up to date though we would also like to take the opportuniy to thank all the Thai fishing guides that have helped us make our guests dreams come true, Boy, Ow, Gop, Wit, Mut...you are the makers of many a western anglers dream fishing holiday, a big thank you for the last 3 months it's been the most amazing 3 months fishing I have ever witnessed, and I'm sure that is true for many of our guests too.

First honours for the record breaking spree goes to Lloyd of East Anglia, who successfully landed these two magnificent Giant Siamese Carp in celebration of his 40th Birthday. The holiday was a surprise gift from his partner Linda and nephew Glenn, what a birthday present! Lloyd played and landed the fish without any assistance other than a clean netting from the guides. The Carp at 53kg and 55kg respectively where both tempted from the same bungalow at Bungsamran and came at around the same time of day 24hrs apart. A few special flavourings in the rice bran mix seemed to do the trick.

Less than a week after this capture we was fishing Shadow Lake with our good expat friend Jamie, when yours truly hooked up with a lump of a stripy at 22kg, a full 2kg over the new pending record. Jamie dear chap, when am I going to see that picture off your mobile phone! Never mind though theres been no shortage of 18kg to 25kg stripped catfish in truth.

Heres one example(pictured above), caught by our latest guest to experience Thailand’s crazy fishing scene, this one was a mere 19kg or so which is over the current world record, but not the pending world record. Tony also caught a 10.4kg Barramundi, a record for Siam Fishing tours, and a new one on us...a Russian Catfish?(so we are told, but I'm not sure) seems its not only the Russian women coming to Thailand for the weather! I'm not sure the Barra is in the record breaking category, but its by far the biggest one we have captured to date, and well who would submit a record for the "Russian Catfish"? It didn't even cross our minds until we had released it!

Tony (of Watford Piscators)was a very knowledgeable on the subject of photography, and we wanted to use his camera skills to get some good venue shots at Lake Monsters, look out for the new venues page coming on the website soon. The result of the fishing? This magnificent Arapaima that came In at over 86kg (exact weight to be verified).

This time we got it right! Scales where ready, length of fish measured at 72” Girth at 41” witnesses present, terminal tackle kept. Now we are just pondering the decision whether to submit the Arapaima as our first world record since it exceeds the current record by around 3kg, of course we know there are many 100kg+ specimens now at Gillhams Fishing Resort as well as Lake Monsters, but it might be nice to bring the record to Thailand for the sake of making people aware of the fish that can be caught out here, a decision will be made in conjunction with Tony shortly.

Apart from world record class catches, we have had a host of other guests take some magnificent fish, all be it often with a little help from our guides. Lenny from Texas had a crazy days Mekong fishing on Bungsamran, when he took the 4 fish show below in a single day!

Not one of these fish was under 70kg and we put 90kg+ on the largest. The crazy thing about that day is that Lenny also hooked up with at least 3 others of a similar size. We knew we had been doing something right down at Bungsamran for sometime with most of our customers taking 100LB+ Mekongs. But this day was to be the start of a whole new level of Mekong hunting on Bungsamran. Lennys 4 fish where quickly followed by Richard Larkin of Ireland's numerous 60kg monsters over the course of his 3 week stay. Richard took Mekongs of 60kg+ 80kg+ 65kg as well as many others. I think in the end we lost count of how many decent size Mekongs Richard took, and as per usual with these unstoppable fish, at least as many where unfortunately lost.

Included in Richard’s intinary was a trip down to Stuart Gillhams new venue targeting those Arapaima. Gillhams is my favorite venue right now. It's without question the most beautiful fishing venue in Thailand, a venue born of a pure passion for Thailand's freshwater fishing scene, and it is currently fishing it's head of for Arapaima, we took 4 in total along with Redtail Catfish, Pacu, Leopard tails, Alligator Gar and more. At one point we even thought we had hooked up with the venues lonesome 80kg Stingray, when a fish ran and went immediately to ground for a good 20 minutes or so we all believed the Stingray was going to make an appearance but, bizarrely in the end suddenly the run continued and a teddybear sized Redtail surfaced! It was mystery where that small Redtail had been, seems theres a mystery blackhole in that swim! Since we was all certain there where no snag in the lake at that location, which is what had us convinced it was the Stingray.Oh well next time!

Just as we thought things could not get any better for our customers Rob from our home town in Kent, took on his first day at Bungsamran one Mekong catfish at 80kg+ followed a few hours letter with our biggest Mekong since we began. This fish was huge, and all the Thai Guides present felt it exceeded the 100kg mark. It was the fish that finally prompted us to go and get our 150kg certified scales! After a break in Hua Hin, Rob returned for a few more days for a trip to Lake Monsters, where once again the usual 7 or 8 species haul was produced, but sadly this time no Arapaima, they was no where to be seen on the day, which is quite unusual. Rob was however lucky enough to catch a rare Bungsamran Sorubim, not bad considering theres only suppose to be 6 in there along with the 50,000 Mekong and Stripped Catfish!

Finally we have to include Paul Roberts from Bristol here. Paul has fished with us now 3 times in the last 12 months, having had his own red letter day back in May 'o7 with 4 Mekongs of 40kg in a day, it was now time to start getting him into the heavyweight category. No problems! We hadn’t had a customer take a Mekong less than 60kg since the beginning of December! (OK all you day trippers who lost them! Sorry you’ll have to come back for a longer stint next time! A day or two's practice is all it takes! You know it makes sense.)

It proved easy for Paul since he has had some practice now with the big Mekongs. He took a 65kg fish in the first few hours of his holiday. Paul was struggling though with a few back problems so in the end I had to take the 2nd decent fish of the day at 68kg...shame! A trip to Lake Monsters saw Paul virtually empty the place taking 7 species in a day and around 30 or more fish in total.

Lake Monsters seems to be having a strange effect on our guests of late, a kind of angling fetish it seems, and it's catching! It involves fishing in ones underpants, and then posing for the photo to appear naked with the fish! Unfortunately though Paul lost his chances at a big Arapaima this time round when two estimated at 60kg up spat the hooks when they noticed Paul was not dressed appropriately for the occassion...so see you again soon then Paul?

These are just some of the highlights of the last 3 months. We hope this illustrates the awesome fishing action many of our guests have enjoyed (or endured!) thanks all of you for coming fishing with Siam Fishing Tours.
